Thank you Southend Soroptimists

A huge and heartfelt thanks from Purple Teardrop Campaign to SI Southend who have collected up 1250 bras for Free the Girls as part of their International Women’s Day activities. Southend residents brought their pre-loved bras to the Royals Shopping Centre and amongst the many visitors welcomed to the Soroptimist stand were the Mayor Councillor Judith McMahon and local MP, Sir David Amess.

And with some 150 signatures added to our ‘Ban Sex for Sale Advertising’ Campaign too, you’re amazing Southend Soroptimists! Thank you!

Independent Anti Slavery Commissioner’s News and Insights Article on 2017

It is estimated that there are as many as 13,000 people trapped in modern slavery in the United Kingdom, relentlessly suffering at the hands of ruthless slave masters. Many find this difficult to comprehend. Where is this happening? Is it really taking place in our communities? And on our streets?

Last week a report called “Understanding and Responding to Modern Slavery within Homelessness Sector”, commissioned by the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner and produced by The Passage, was published. The report makes 12 recommendations. These include closer working between local authorities and police to raise awareness of modern slavery; appropriate data collection to increase understanding of the links between homelessness and modern slavery; awareness raising among the homeless so that they can understand the risks of exploitation; long-term support provision for victims of modern slavery; and establishment of partnerships across homelessness charities, anti-slavery organisations, police, local authorities and other relevant actors in order to address gaps in support.
